Bluetooth vs Cellular Smart Labels: How to Choose

Most “which tracker” comparisons fudge the fundamental split: does the label know where it is and report it itself, or does a surrounding partner network detect it and relay the event? Everything else — price, battery, size, coverage model — flows from that single decision.

Cost and scale

A Bluetooth sticker contains a fraction of the electronics of a cellular label — no SIM, no modem, no satellite receiver. That makes stickers like the GNTS1 cheap enough to treat as disposable at carton level — hundreds or thousands of units per month. A cellular-enabled label like the LL100 costs more per unit and usually carries a connectivity cost, so it’s typically reserved for shipments whose value or risk justifies it. Two network models

The GNTS1 rides a partner detection network: its secure, encrypted Bluetooth signal is picked up by compatible participating devices — smartphones, access points, IoT infrastructure, vehicle telematics — an ecosystem of more than 100 million devices and rapidly expanding. That scale is real, but it isn't a guarantee: detection depends on the presence, configuration and connectivity of participating devices at that place and moment. The LL100 takes the other path: its own cellular connection reports through mobile network coverage, wherever supported coverage exists.

Battery and reporting

Bluetooth beacons sip power and run for months; cellular modems and GNSS receivers are hungry, so LL100 battery life is measured against how often you ask it to report. “Up to” figures from any vendor assume favourable conditions — always validate against your own lane profile in a pilot. Neither architecture promises a fixed detection interval: GNTS1 events happen when compatible infrastructure is encountered; LL100 events follow your configured reporting profile.

Questions to ask before a pilot

  • Which legs of my route pass through busy, device-rich areas — and which are genuinely remote?
  • What’s the value at risk per shipment, and what would one prevented loss pay for?
  • How many units per month — and does per-unit cost or per-shipment data quality dominate?
  • Are any legs air freight, and what does the airline accept?
